Many of my recent paintings celebrate life in Colorado, a state of natural grandeur graced by intense blue skies and dramatic mountainscapes, all covering dry upland desert. I lived there and chose to paint in vibrantly colored acrylics.
Now I have returned full-circle to Central Illinois. The corn and soy prairies, the lush greenness all about, the meandering rivers and sun dappled forests present a more subtle landscape, one that invites closer observation of its beauty and vitality. Farm country is my heritage and heartscape.
I have been an artist all my life ~ whether a graphic designer in Washington, DC and Illinois; a wood block print maker; a book designer, writer, and illustrator; or art teacher. I continue to explore in acrylic and watercolor with renewed commitment and awareness of the power of place in forming who I am, who I become.
My life path has turned more intimately to my practice of yoga and tai chi, two meditative movement arts that sustain my days and enrich my creative life. I love to express the energy lines of flowing movement, the quirky exuberance of the ancient Vedic gods and goddesses, the atmospheric light of places I treasure. When there is nothing to paint, a visit to my garden to gather a bouquet-as-still life refreshes me.
My quiet search for connection weaves throughout my work ~ to earth and sky; people and spirit. Capturing that awareness with my eyes, translating through my hands and brush to paper or canvas is a joyous and sometimes difficult path. Our human essence, our drive and deep desire to connect to an other, to share a moment of realization of beauty and grace, can nourish one’s spirit and life.
I am delighted when a child walks through my gallery and pauses, seemingly just knows, and states “I like this painting.” I do not ask why. I smile. Ah, yes. Connection.
